Top Five Effective Ways to Help Your Teen Make Friends

Some teens are social butterflies and do not have any problems making friends. However, many teens struggle to form friendships. If you are the parent of an anti-social teen, then there are several things that you can do to help him or her make friends. Below are some tips for helping your teen make friends:

 

Talk to Your Teen

 

Before you try to get your teen to make friends, you should first talk to him or her. This will help you determine why he or she does not have any friends. When you are talking to your teen, you should ask him or her if he or she has done anything to make friends.

 

Help Him or Her Build Socialization Skills

 

Many teens struggle to make friends simply because they do not know how to socialize with people. You can help your teen develop socialization skills by teaching him or her to introduce him or herself and keeps a conversation going. Additionally, you should teach your teen ways to resist peer pressure.

 

Get Your Teen Involved In Extracurricular Activities

 

Many teens go to school all day, come home and isolate themselves from everybody until the next school day. Sitting inside of the house all day makes it very difficult for one to make friends. That is why you should encourage your teen to get involved in some sort of extracurricular activity.

 

Extracurricular activities allow shy teens to interact with other people. Furthermore, they allow teens to make friends with people who have similar interests.

 

Meet Your Teen’s Friends

 

It is very important for you to make sure that your teen is making friends with the right people. Many troubled teens have ruined their lives because they decided to hang out with the wrong group of people. Before you allow your teen to go out with a new group of friends, you should meet them. You should also meet the parents of your teen’s friends.

 

Invite Your Teen’s Friends to Your Place

 

Once you have met your teen’s friends, you should invite them over to your place. You can invite them over for dinner and family outings.  You can even drive your teen and his or her friends to places.

 

Talking to your teen and teaching him or her socialization skills are some of the things that you can do to get your teen to make friends. You should also encourage your teen to get involved in extracurricular activities so that they can make friends with the right people.
