We made it back

Yep late again :-)

The flight back seemed like it took SO much longer than the trip there. But we arrived safe and sound Tuesday about 4:30pm.

We both took Wednesday off, Thursday and Friday were a blur for me. Plus this weekend was our maintenance weekend so we had to patch all the servers. I work for 4 hours Saturday night.

The rest of our trip in China went pretty smooth. Since we weren’t doing the 2nd site because the network line wasn’t in yet. It gave us enough time to complete the 1st site without too many issues. We still worked between 4-16 hours each day we where in China.

Now I’m just waiting for the list of things that don’t work and find out when the line for the 2nd site will be installed and see if we can do that remotely!

The guys that went to Tianjin got to see the Great Wall and other very interesting things. It seems like Shanghai is much more modern and at least what we saw didn’t have a lot of the nice traditional Chinese buildings or sites. (Maybe we just didn’t have enough time to see them)

The black hole of time

So much for posting daily updates of our progress. So here’s a condensed version:

Day 2 (Friday) - Worked on completing workstation backups,  routing is working, we setup DHCP on a temp server to give out the new IP scheme. Changes the IP addresses on the servers. For lunch we were taking to a dumplings place, it was really good, the building was about 500 years old!

Day 3,4 (Saturday & Sunday) Complete OS installs of all workstations except for 5 Dell precision workstations. The riverbed still was not working, started file server move to Tainjin data center 300GB of data! Migrated users using ADMT and setup mailboxes for them on the exchange 2003 server. Moved MX records

Day 5 (Monday) Work with users all day, waiting for MX records to replicate. Setup printers in Tainjin (Bad idea, way too slow!) Still trying to get precision workstations to work with Altiris.

Day 6 (Tuesday) Decided to manually install OS for precision machines. Figured out I had to allow exchange to accept emails from the china domain even though the users SMTP address was already setup.

Day 7 (Wednesday) We where going to take a half day and see some of the sites in shanghai, that didn’t work out. User issues, outlook offline address book and a general craziness caused us to work until 5pm. Michael REALY wanted to see Huangpu River and the Bund. So we went to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It was cool, but Stuart and I where really tired, so we headed back to the hotel on our own. Two Americans riding the subway and walking back to their hotel, not quite sure of the way….but we made it.

Day 8 (Today) Things are claiming down. I finally got the riverbed working. Its optimizing between Shanghai and Tainjin, but the unit in  Grand Haven still is not working. I’m still having issues with the offline address book. We started the CAD software installs today.

almost everyone for lunch they brought in food from the same place, but it is very similar food. One day they brought us KFC, it was really good. We’ve also been to a “western” restaurant, it was awful! We went to Malone’s one night, good food, good drinks, good time, at least for Stuart and me. Alex and Michael didn’t care for it because it was too loud. We still want to visit the German restaurant and the Zoo before we go. I’ll try to post more over the next few days.

Day 1

We got the mpls connection and switch setup and running with very little issue. Other than not all the routes where setup. But we could at least get back to the root of the forest.

We still have to get the riverbed setup, its currently not working at any of our sites. The guys back in GH are going to get the interforest trust setup for us tonight and the routing fixed. So we should be ready to start migrating users, creating mailboxes and using Altiris to reinstall the workstations tomorrow.

We have some issues backing up the workstations. We are suing zipbackup to a NAS box. I’m concerned that we might miss data, because we are only backing up documents and settings and any other folder the user tells us about. We’ll see I told the IT guy in Shanghai that any missed data is on him.

We had a long day (in the office until 7pm) then went to dinner. Some of the food was good, some ok, and a few things where yuck. But I tried most everything.

I’m dead tired, time for bed.

The first night

We got to our hotel around 10pm. It looks a like a very nice hotel, but I’m not sure about the area around here. Looking out my window all the buildings look very run down.

We are staying at the Royalton

I slept for about 4-5 hours. Woke up around 5 and couldn’t go back to sleep. We have to be down to eat breakfast at 6:30 and are being picked up at 7:05 (any who knows me, knows I’m not a morning person)

I’ll keep updating as a can, this first day should be fine, its getting the mpls connection up and going.

I checked the helpdesk back home and it looks like they are having as much fun as we where well they where gone :-)

China flight

We’ve made it to Japan without any real issues. Now just a 2 hour flight to Shanghai. Stuart’s handling flying ok, the 12 hour flight did wear on him. I was ready to get off the plan about 10 hours into the trip. The last two hours were a major drag.

We get into Shanghai about 8:30pm, so we should be to the hotel by 11. Tomorrow’s going to be rough.

China Trip

I’ll be leaving for China on Tuesday. I’ll be there for two weeks to bring one of our sites online with the mpls and reinstall all 60 of their workstations. We’ll also connect one of our small sites to this one. A lot of work for only two weeks time. I have another co-worker going with me, there is also an onsite IT person and one of our counterparts from the Tianjin office will be join us.

I’ll try to document how things go over the next two weeks here on benway.net. It should keep me posting to the site and help me working on my writing and documentation skills.

I should be on MSN IM and Skype most of my time over there so drop me a line if you have questions or are in Shanghai. (I’ll add my online info here shortly)
