The Lions, the ring, and the xbox

What a 4th of July weekend so far. We took Grace to duck lake state parks it was great weather and we all had a great time. Towards the end of the day Melissa and I were playing catch with a football in the water, I reached out with my left hand to make a catch and my wedding ring went flying off, we sent about 20 minutes but we couldn’t find it. Better mine then hers, I can get another ring much easier than Melissa can.

lionssofatc15 Melissa had to work Saturday morning, I decided that Grace and I would pickup some flowers and take them into work to surprise Melissa. Since we where all in Muskegon we decided to do some shopping. We stopped to look for a bed from Grace, I was checking out their home theater stuff and saw they had lionsreclinerbd Lions furniture. I thought Melissa would get a kick out of it so I showed it to her. She went nuts over it and wants to get it for the basement. I like the stuff, but I can’t believe she’s so crazy for it.

We stopped by BestBuy to look at the Flip video and try to find the new two disc version of gears of war. The Flip Video was a bust, they couldn’t get their demo unit to turn on. But I did get Gears of War. Wow, incredible game, but either I’m really bad at it or its really hard!! I played for about 2 hours  tonight. Anyone else get the game recently and want to play co-op let me know.

Fatherhood - Raising A Real Man In A Metrosexual World

Trying to raise a real man in today’s world may be harder than splitting an atom.  Everyday our kids are bombarded with images and messages of the most unmanly things imaginable.  Magazines are full of sexually ambiguous models dressed in feminine clothes in homo-erotic poses.  There’s a new book out every month about how you don’t need a man in the house to raise a man.  TV shows typically are full of metro-sexual, gay, and otherwise wimpy male characters, and nearly every Hollywood movie that comes out has at least one homosexual character.  Almost every dad in the movies or on TV is either a miserable lout or a complete buffoon.  At school your kids are subjected to all sorts of programs designed to promote unmanly lifestyles.  Real men have disappeared from history books and have been replaced with politically correct figures.  Any boy reading magazines, attending public school, and watching TV or movies would assume that half of the men in the world are gay, and the other half are metro-sexual or girlie men.  That’s why your job as a father is as tough as it’s even been.  It’s you against the world.

Here’s the key items you can read more about in the article

  • Let them play with boy toys
  • Let them play like boys
  • Do manly activities with your boys
  • Do manly activities with other men and boys
  • Do manly activities with your boys regularly
  • Get them involved in team sports.
  • Teach them guidelines about crying
  • Provide positive reinforcement
  • Don’t save your boys from suffering the consequences
  • Don’t rush them in to manhood.
  • Be firm, but fair
  • Don’t be his friend
  • Show affection

More Genealogy stuff

I’m doing a little more comparing of the different webby genealogy sites I was talking about here.

I’m surprised how many of these sites don’t have a to enter maiden names and married names. So far Genoom, MyFamily, and Kindo don’t seem to support this, but itsourtree and Geni do.

I think I’m going to go with Geni for now. Since it has full import/export of GEDCOM files. I can always take my data with me. Now if they only had a offline app that would sync with the online version so I could take it to my family reunions. Since most of them don’t have internet or computers. I know I could take notes and update later. But an offline app would be nice..hint..hint :-)

I added a bunch of family member profiles last night. I also started inviting more family to help update it. So far, only my father in-law has signed up.

Fun Weekend

The Love Guru

Image via Wikipedia

Saturday night we went out with some friends and saw the Love Guru with Mike Myers. It was better than I expected, but I didn’t expect much. I was not up to the standard of any of the Austin Powers movies, but did provide a good number of chuckles. I would recommend you wait for DVD for this movie. We went to the early show so it wasn’t 8 bucks per person.

After the movie we came back to the house and played Mario Cart Wii and then Scene-IT on the Xbox. We had a blast playing games. Melissa beat everyone in Scene-IT multiple times.

Sunday we went to church at Grace Church then down to Pronto Pups (Yummy) and walked the boardwalk and got ice cream. Grace was so cute waving to boats going by and yelling at the ducks in the water.

I still need to mow today, but these are the kind of nice summer weekends that you want to last forever.

Web 2.0 Genealogy Sites

I’ve found 6 slick web 2.0 genealogy sites, the fun is deciding on which one to spend my time entering all my family history into. Here’s the sites I’ve found

Thumbnail via WebSnapr: http://www.genoom.com http://www.genoom.com

Thumbnail via WebSnapr: http://www.itsourtree.com http://www.itsourtree.com

I’ve entered the most data into geni and itsourtree both seem solid. I haven’t dug into the details of all these sites, but here’s a few things I’d like to see.

  • full import/export of gedcom files
  • link to photos on other services (flickr, picasa, etc)
  • reminders for life events
  • search and link public records
  • Control information allow control of public/private data
  • free :-)
  • good business model or financials, so I know the service will be around for awhile

I helped my father in-law put together a swing set for Grace. It took us all day Saturday and about 4 hours on Sunday. But it done. Grace loves it! She spent over an hour today just swing. I’ll upload a few picks to flickr tonight and link them here.

Kid Rock and the SuperBowl

What a weekend, Friday night I went to the Kid Rock concert in GR. As always Kid Rock puts on the best concert, ever!

Now we are just getting ready for our SuperBowl party. The wife made two cakes, one of Giants and one of the Pats jersey.

We’ll have the game on in the living room and down stairs in HD on the 103 inch projector. Hell yeah!

Go Pats!!!

Weekend alone

Melissa and Grace went to see Melissa’s dad this weekend, so I’m rolling solo this weekend. I rented a few games and have 4 great football games on this weekend. Too bad I have to work tonight (Server maintenance window weekend)

I also want to test embedding images with MS Live Writer onto my WordPress sites.

Here’s a picture of Grace

A late merry Christmas and a happy new year

I’ve been keeping offline this last week or so, enjoying extra time with the family. Grace really enjoyed her Christmas at home. I’ve had this entire week of so far and Melissa has worked, so Grace and I have been playing with her new toys. She’s growing up so fast and learning new things all the time. With a little help from us she is walking up and down the stairs, she’s also pulling herself on onto chairs, small tables, and other small things.

I got her blocks and crayons for Christmas, so far she just likes to dump the blocks out of the bag and put them back in :-)

She’s also become a little helper. if she spills her drink she wants a napkin to clean it up and she also helps pickup her toys.

I need to pull the pictures off the camera then I’ll upload some to flickr and post one here.
