What good are these numbers

Here’s my Alexa ’stats’

Alexa Certified Traffic Ranking for www.benway.net

Technorati has two different number

Your blog Rank: 868,767 and your authority 7

Google has their own Page Rank that some people live and die by:

Page Rank Check

I’m sure there are even more. But what good are these numbers.

Google’s PR is used by most people for advertising value, but Google has such strict rules. They use their PR number to control how you can link to other sites and how you link to advertisements, of course unless your using adsense :-)

I guess it depends on the purpose of the web site. I do try to make a little extra money with this site, but I also just like technology and the web. I like to express my opinions and what I find interesting. I know I have a very small following and I’m good with that. I don’t want to feel like I have to post every single day.

Looking at the numbers above I just find it funny the variation in the numbers. I’ve owned this site for about 10 years and it’s always been some form of CMS or Blog. But I’m sure the fact that my links have changed format over the years hasn’t helped people find old information.

What do you think about your Internet ‘rank’ Do you care? Like I said before some people have their entire site devoted to increasing their rank. Guess that’s one of the nice things about the web, to each their own.

Upgraded to Wordpress 2.6

I just upgraded to wordpress 2.6 using WordPress Automatic Upgrade

The process went nice and smooth with no issues. I had to update tantan’s google reports plugin with a file from the support forums, but other than that all plugins worked without an issue.

Spam Karma is no longer…

I’m surprised that I didn’t see more about this around the blogo-sphere. The owner of the Spam Karma plug-in is giving up the code and making it GPL. So anyone can pick it up and start supporting it again. One of the things I love about spam karma that I haven’t been able to find in other plugins is the ability to go back and scan old comments. Well right now spam karma is still working for me, so I’m good for now.

Wordpress 2.5.1, not too bad

Well out of all the plug-ins I use here on benway.net only 3 of them don’t seem to want to work with the new version. I’d also like to find a new theme to support the new builtin gravatar features.

I can’t get Gregarious,LinkWorth, and LinkXL plugins to work.

WordPress Plugin - Socialize Me

WOW, this is an incredible plugin, when someone visits your site from a social network link, it will welcome them and then link to your profile on that social network! I plan on adding this to both sites this weekend.

Someone doesn’t seem to want people to link to their post, even if I did totally quote and link to the site. Oh, well. I’ve changed it to link directly to the plugins developer.

How to Do Follow?

I’m running wordpress 2.3.2 on both my sites.

But I can’t get Do Follow working on either of them. on this site I’m using DoFollow 4.0 from Kimmo Suomienen and Savage Nomads I’m using Dofollow 3.0 (semi-dofollow) from Denis de Bernardy and neither seem to be working :-(

I don’t want to edit core files so I would prefer to use a plug-in

Thanks,jb

Moving post between wordpress sites

I have two existing wordpress sites. I would like to move some categories and post from one site to the other.

I know there is the export feature, but that grabs all information and it sounds like it is to import into a new wordpress site not an existing.

Any ideas?

Thanks,jb

Adding Extra Sidebar to your Wordpress Theme

Here’s a sweet little exercise on adding a sidebar to a wordpress theme.

You like a Wordpress theme on the Internet but Oh!… What’s this?? The theme has only one sidebar! You need more than one and are on the verge of switching to some other theme with more sidebars. But wait!! Let me teach you how to add an extra sidebar or sidebars to your favorite theme. People who know PHP will find it easy to follow but even novices can easily do it using the code that I have provided in this tutorial. I am assuming that you already know HTML and a bit of CSS.

To begin the tutorial, extract your theme into a folder and open it to see all the files. If your theme has only one sidebar, then most probably you will NOT find a file called functions.php in your theme folder. In that case you will have to create this file yourself. Just open notepad or any other code editor to start a new file. Put this code into that file :-

<?php
if ( function_exists('register_sidebars') )
    register_sidebars(2);
?>

Comment Icons

I added the MyAvatar plugin to the site today. If you have a MyBlogLog or Gravatar icon they should show up by your comment. Give it a try and let me know. I’ve also added a sidebar listed the top commenters for the month, without the nofollow tag.
