Facebook likes and dislikes
Posted by jayb in Technology on November 21, 2009
I thought I’d put together a few things I wish facebook would change and some facebook games I spend way too much time on.
First my wants.
More ‘bookmarks’
Why can’t I add more than six bookmarks to the bottom of the page. Look at all the empty space
Where do the facebook applications specific list go? Some times they are there other times they just disappear.
You can tell the Mafia Wars is application specific because it has the apps logo. Other apps/games I play show on the list, then they dissapear. I’d also like to just keep the list expanded instead of collapsed.
Now I’ll list the games I enjoy on facebook, if you want to ‘friend’ me on these games I’ll have to ‘friend’ me on facebook first

Tweaking comments
Image via CrunchBase
I got rid of http://www.intensedebate.com/ for my comments because they could never get the sync right and I constantly had thousands of comments waiting for moderation in my dashboard. But CommentLuv did work with ID so that was nice.
Now I’m back to the standard wordpress comments. I’d love to add the ability to link both google connect and facebook connect to my comments, but I haven’t found an easy way to link both yet that also allows CommentLuv to continue to work.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
I hope to add a few more tweaks to the site this week, things have been so busy since our second child last week. I haven’t been able to update or due much with the site.

Small mini rant for Sunday

First I’m getting so sick of ‘sort of’ comment spam. They link to their crappy websites that are just selling crap. But they do add a one line comment that has something to do with the post. Most of the time its broken English saying something like ‘thank you for this great information it will help me buy computer’ or ‘I didn’t know that, this was good information and will help me with career’
So they at least read the post or part of it, but then they link to mycrappyproduct.com and they do this to multiple post in the same time frame. Since they left a somewhat valid comment, I feel like I should approve it. But the blatant spam link bothers me.
Speaking of comments. I’ve been trying to run IntenseDebate on this site since Automattic purchased them. The import still doesn’t fully sync. The amount of moderated comments never matches up. Their spam filter is very weak and support is slow (I understand its free). This site has been around for years using different CMS packages. When I moved to wordpress I imported all my old post and comments. A lot of the really old comments where spam, I was hoping with ID re-importing my comments they would filter out the old spam comments. I think its about time I moved my comments back.
Facebook and LinkedIn
I’ve been spending some time on Facebook and LinkedIn lately. Facebook just reminds me of the general get in touch with old friends type web site. I like linkedin because its more business related and I think has greater potential.
I also use Plaxo and I like their new social integration.
Also does Facebook have a RSS feed for your ‘mini-feed’ ?

What to do with comments

Which would drive more comments? Users getting links back with the commentluv plugin, or the ability to login with facebook or Twitter.
I know there is a facebook connect wordpress plugin, but I’d heard a few negative things about it ( it adds the users to to your wordpress logons and it can cause a slow down on your site because of cache or lack of cache. I could use one of the twitter retweet plugins (http://www.dragonblogger.com/retweet-your-wordpress-posts-with-tweetmeme/ or http://danzarrella.com/beyond-tweetbacks-introducing-tweetsuite.html, but those don’t let you log into to leave a comment, they just let you retweet your comment.
I test most new plugins and features here before I move it to my other site that gets a lot more traffic.
What do you think, move the comments to DisQus or Intense Debate and lose Commentluv or Keep the luv?
