After just coming back to XP (link) This is a great list of new free software to try.

How to Manage Power Settings as a Non-Admin
Posted by jayb in Uncategorized on July 20, 2005
This post is great for Admins trying to run with least privileges for their users. The post also includes a link for a way to view the calendar in the time/date applet without being an admin
A regular “user” does not have the ability to modify their power settings.? This is a real pain especially for laptop users.? The default Windows XP installation does a standby after 10 minutes of activity and a hibernate after 30 minutes.? There is nothing more frustrating for a user than to be in the middle of a presentation and have the laptop go into standby mode.? The only solution for this in the past was to give the user temporary Power User or Administrator rights on the PC since power management is managed on a per user basis.
I was doing some digging tonight and found this great gem on how to grant the rights for non-admins to manage their own power settings: http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/archive/2005/02/09/370263.aspx

Task Switcher on Steroids

More great links from the MSDN blogs.
Steve Butler turned me on to this nifty utility that replaces the stock Task Switcher functionality.

switcher seems so, well — plain, that I’ve put it on all my other
machines too. Pretty neat.
